Cape Canaveral, Fla. – Buzz Aldrin’s ShareSpace Foundation (SSF) has entered into a strategic partnership with Destination Imagination (DI), a volunteer-led non-profit organization whose purpose is to inspire and equip students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders.
“This partnership is a key part of delivering SSF’s mission of igniting children’s passion for science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) through delivering hands-on activities, inspirational messages and Innovation Kits,” said Linn LeBlanc, Executive Director of SSF, “We are delighted to be working in partnership with DI, encouraging students to develop a lifelong, life-changing love for, and potentially a career in STEAM.”
The first element of the partnership will be participating in the Destination Imagination Global Finals, to be held in Knoxville, Tennessee May 20-23, 2015, involving more than 17,000 students and supporters and featuring 1,400 teams from across America and 18 countries. SSF President and Apollo 11 Astronaut Buzz Aldrin will launch the Global Finals with Destination Imagination, Inc. CEO Dr. Chuck Cadle, in an opening ceremony, as well as host an Interactive Intergalactic Experience Q & A Workshop for the participants.
“I still remember the opening dialogue for Star Trek, ‘Where no man has gone before,’ said Dr. Chuck Cadle, CEO of Destination Imagination. “This is not the case with Buzz Aldrin as his historic accomplishments and imagination continue to lead us to explore the unknown. His work to develop a colony on Mars is groundbreaking and inspirational and we are excited to partner with his ShareSpace Foundation to inspire the next generation of space leaders and innovators.”
Global Finals is the culminating international competition for the DI season. At the event, student teams are invited to participate in one of six different academic challenges to showcase their skills in creativity and innovation. The Challenge program is developed annually to ensure the competitions are relevant and align with National Education Standards, STEM standards, ELA Common Core Standards and Mathematics Common Core Standards.
