In elementary school, two subjects tend to get left behind in the pursuit of math and literacy fluency…science and social studies. I decided the Giant Mars Map was an excellent way to not only strengthen my students knowledge about Mars but also work on basic map skills. We discussed major features, latitude and longitude, and keys and legends. And then on the last day, the kids flew drones to specific locations based on what they had learned (ie “Land on the highest place on Mars” or “Land at latitude 60N, 90W”). The kids were not only incredible engaged in the moment, it was a lesson that they talked about the remainder of the year!
